Kipp Stewart and Stewart MacDougall for Drexel Declaration; Dining Set

We love finding original catalogs/ ads/ literature for pieces.  In addition to the pleasure of getting to see pieces in their vintage settings, it makes the blog posting a breeze. We can never match the word play of Mid-Century advertising execs., so we just respect and repeat their copy.  Below is an original ad for the Declaration series designed by Kipp Stewart and Stewart MacDougall for Drexel from the late 1950's...."Declaration represents a new frontier in American Furniture fashion." ....."a contemporary approach to Early Americana!  Designs as pure and honest as homespun, inspired by Shaker simplicity, interpreted in time-honored, deep brown walnut.  Details as smart as silk." The details on this set are pretty smart.  Our favorite is the chair spindles.  The set has three side chairs and one arm chair.  The table is a drop-leaf and comes with one additional leaf.  The simplicity of the set is reminiscent of Shaker designs and is part of what makes it just as fresh and contemporary, but also as timeless, today as when it was designed in the late 1950's.  The chairs and table are in excellent vintage condition.  Table; Leaves down, 42" w., 26" l., 29" h.  Leaves up, 62" l. Leaves up with 22" leaf, 84" l.  American, c. 1950's  $1,275.00

Chinoiserie Credenza

No name dropping here.  There is no maker's mark or label on this piece.  And while we love a good research project, we couldn't find any pieces similar let alone identical to this credenza.  That being said, the quality is great and the design is beautiful and very unique.  The ten drawer bleached walnut credenza has bleached, burled pulls framed in faux bamboo.  The legs are also faux bamboo.  The piece is in good original vintage condition with some wear to the finish and some marking.  60" l., 20" d., 35" h.  American, c. 1950's  $850.00

Barnard and Simonds Table and Chairs

The Barnard and Simonds Furniture Company was founded in New York in 1898, moved to Michigan in 1959, and was purchased by Baker Furniture in 1967.  They specialized in very fine quality American and English Country reproductions and adaptations.  We love this classic leather games/ library/ breakfast table and chairs with brass tacks and mahogany faux bamboo legs.  The table has gold embossing and a slightly scalloped skirt.  A set of four chairs without the table in similar condition recently sold on Chairish and was listed at $3,800.00 U.S.  https://www.chairish.com/product/611163/barnard-simonds-leather-library-chairs-set-of-4
A set of two similar chairs is also available currently.  https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/seating/office-chairs-desk-chairs/pair-of-barnard-simonds-blue-leather-mahogany-armchairs/id-f_3324562/
Two of the chairs we are featuring are in good vintage condition with some cracking but no tears and the leather is still very soft.  Two of the chairs are in very good vintage condition with a very small amount of cracking, no tears, and very soft leather.  The table is in excellent vintage condition.  We have only ever come across one other piece by Barnard and Simonds which we sold a few years ago.  It was a screen (pictured) and it was also very handsome and beautifully crafted.

Russel Wright for Conant Ball; Desk

Russel Wright (1904-1976) was an American Industrial designer who revolutionized the way people lived.  He believed design started with the dinner table, which is the center of the home, and then should work outward to furnishings, interiors, architecture and landscaping.  Wright, throughout his long and very successful career, designed everything from table ware and appliances to textiles and furniture.  He worked with great manufacturers like Steubenville Pottery and Conant Ball Furniture to produce his designs.   He and his wife Mary, with whom  he partnered professionally, wrote several books on "living" including "Guide to Easier Living" in which they wrote "Good informal living substitutes a little head work for a lot of legwork. It doesn't need wealth, but it does take thought, some ingenuity and resourcefulness, and more than a little loving care to create a home that is really your own."  They are widely credited with inventing lifestyle marketing.

This smart and clean-lined birch desk was designed by Wright as part of the Modernmates collection for Conant Ball.  It has a bank of three graduated drawers and the bottom drawer has removable file dividers.  The top center drawer is divided into six compartments.  The desk is in very good vintage condition with minor age appropriate wear to the finish and comes with a custom glass top (not pictured).  48" l., 24" d., 30.5" h.  American, c.1950's  SOLD

Strange bedfellows.  Our June windows marry two of our favorite (if somewhat incongruous) styles, East Coast Prep and Asian Modern.  We've always loved the pagoda shape and decided to Pulitzer it up with preppy pink and green.  The side panels reference the simplicity of the Japanese flag.  The Asian Modern black lacquered chairs, in the style of James Mont, are by Century Furniture, c. 1970's.  $1,250.00 for the pair  SALE  $895.00 for the pair

Harvey Probber Side Table

Harvey Probber was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1922 and began working as a designer immediately after graduating from high school.  He established his own design firm, Harvey Probber, Inc. in 1945 and soon became one of the leading modern designers in America.  Unlike many of his contemporaries, his approach to modernism tended to reject austerity and typical materials, and favor exotic woods, hand-rubbed finishes and luxurious fabrics in his upholstered pieces.  This can be seen in this handsome side table designed by Probber.  It has a Terrazo marble hexagonal top with inlaid patinated brass and three sculptural bleached mahogany legs.  17.25" h., 19" diam.  American, c. 1950's  SOLD   https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/tables/side-tables/harvey-probber-hexagonal-mahogany-terrazzo-marble-side-table/id-f_985036/
