Henry C. Steul & Sons Art Deco Chest

Henry Christian Steul was born in N.Y. in 1859.  He and his brother Conrad became partners in the furniture business, Steul Bros., in 1882.  Over the next several decades, there were various partners and name changes.  In 1920, the company became Henry C. Steul & Sons.  A 1933 ad in the Buffalo Courier-Express notes... "They have never made anything but the very best furniture. Custom-made pieces. Faithful reproductions of the enduring Early American styles. Their fellow-craftsmen recognize that for this style furniture, which they have made peculiarly their own, there CAN be nothing finer . . . Every piece is a heirloom piece. The turnings are smooth as silk. Most meticulous care is given to the smallest detail. Hand-work .. every bit of it!"  They were best known for their high quality reproduction pieces, but this handsome Art Deco chest exemplifies their fine craftsmanship on an original modern piece.  The three drawer chest has bookmatched burl drawer fronts with patinated brass and Bakelite pulls.  It looks great with or without the original round mirror.  46" w., 20" d., 36" h.  (mirror, 36" diam.)  American, c. 1930's  SOLD
