Curtis Jere "Yacht Race"

"I really don't know why it is that all of us are so committed to the sea, except I think it's because in addition to the fact that the sea changes, and the light changes, and ships change, it's because we all came from the sea.  And it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears.  We are tied to the ocean.  And when we go back to the sea - whether it is to sail or watch it -  we are going back from whence we came."
(Remarks at the Dinner for the America's Cup Crews, September 14, 1962)
- John F. Kennedy
If you are tied to the ocean and go back to the sea to sail, swim or watch it, you will appreciate this wonderful Curtis Jere wall sculpture.  It features two racing yachts, the 'Yanks' and the 'Aussies' with polychromed sailors and patinated brass sails.  Brass rods suggest the turbulent sea and the boats round a flagged buoy.  31" h., 48" w., 5" d.  American, c. 1970's  $475.00

Milo Baughman for Directional; Open Arm Lounge Chair

Mint Milo.  This one is a Wow!  In the last decade, I don't think I have seen an upholstered piece of this age in such unbelievable original condition.  It's showroom fresh and has perhaps become even more stylish with age.  The fabric is a beautiful cut velvet in tones of cream, taupe and beige.  It was designed by Milo Baughman for Directional.  Directional was founded in 1950 by Bud Mesberg, and was one of the first companies to embrace original furniture design.  Included in their roster of designers were Paul Evans, Kip Stewart, Paul McCobb, Vladimir Kagan and Milo Baughman.  It's finds like this that make all those miles worthwhile.  29" h., 29" w., 26" d.  American, c. 1970's  SOLD

Edward Wormley for Dunbar; Burl and Glass Coffee Table

10/10.  Invest in the best.  Edward Wormley (1907-1995) was an American furniture and interior designer who was born in Chicago and started his career as an interior designer for Marshall Fields.  He left Marshall Fields for the Dunbar Furniture Company, and in 1944 was charged with modernizing Dunbar's furniture lines.  He had a long and successful career as Dunbar's director of design until the company was sold in 1970.  He is widely recognized as one of the leaders in bringing modern design to America.  His work has been shown in major exhibitions, including the Boston Museum of Art in 1951, the Triennale XIII in Milan in 1964, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1983.  His designs can be found today in the M.F.A. in Boston and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Montreal.  This table was designed by Wormley for Dunbar and is perfectly timeless in its simplicity and balance of modernity and warmth.  The base is Olive burl and the top is 3/4 inch thick glass.  The table is in nearly mint condition and retains its metal Dunbar tag.  This table is currently retailing for up to $15,000.00 CAN.  But as always, quality, design and value are our hat trick here in Hamilton.  17" h., 41.5" diam.  American, c. 1960's  $2,750.00

Sligh Furniture Co. Writing Desk

Deja vu.  This classic leather-top writing desk by Sligh is very similar in style to the desk we posted two weeks ago, but about 100+ years later.  The desk has a center drawer with a pair of patinated brass pulls.  To the left, there are two drawer fronts but a single drawer of double depth with removable file dividers.  To the right are two drawers, a shallower top and a deeper bottom.  The leather top has gold embossing. 46" w., 23" d., 29.25" h.  American, c. 1960's  $650.00
Condition:  Very good vintage condition with age appropriate wear.

T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings for Widdicomb; Pair of Side Tables

Designed by T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings for Widdicomb, these side tables are cool, clean-lined and thoroughly modern.  Terence Harold Robsjohn-Gibbings was arguably the most important designer in America in the 1930's and 40's.  After opening a shop on Madison Avenue in 1936, he became the designer of choice for such prominent Americans as tobacco heiress Doris Duke, Alfred A. Knopf and Thelma Chrysler Foy.  His style would best be described as modern historicism.  He was heavily influenced by Ancient Grecian design and the vocabulary of the classical world.  That being said, his designs did, during his time, and still do feel fresh and completely modern.  Some of his best known and most iconic pieces were produced during the time he worked as a designer for Widdicomb Furniture, from 1943-1956.  There is a casual elegance and rich simplicity to his work during that period that few others have been able to achieve, but many have tried to copy.  24" h., 30" d., 18" w.  American, c. 1950's  $595.00 for the pair
Condition:  Good usable vintage condition with age appropriate wear and some veneer loss to edges.
